What is History Compass?

History Compass (www.history-compass.com) offers the quality of a scholarly journal combined with the speed and functionality of the Web.

History Compass publishes peer-reviewed state-of-the-field articles on a continuous basis, with new articles appearing in each monthly issue. The ideal Compass article is an intervention in the field or sub-field, showing its present state and direction in the future. While our authors are leading researchers, we do not publish detailed primary research but rather an author’s position on the field or sub-field. As a Compass article must be accessible to international and interdisciplinary scholars, teachers, and interested readers, we call it research with a public face.

ISSN: 1478-0542

History Compass provides...

  • A new kind of core content: state-of-the-art surveys of current research discuss the major topics, issues, viewpoints, and controversies within each area of the discipline.
  • Coverage of the entire field highlights connections across sub-disciplines of historical scholarship
  • Reference-linked bibliographies for each article, providing the ideal entry point into specialist literature
  • Teaching Guides from article authors to inspire and engage your students
  • 100 new authoritative, peer-reviewed survey articles per year: 3 times more than a standard journal
  • Fast continuous publication: articles typically available 12-16 weeks after acceptance and as an online-only journal there are no issue restrictions
  • Compass podcasts allow you to plug into the fresh, lively, up-to-the-minute debates and discussions surrounding published Compass articles

Testimonials

"History Compass may soon become the online rival to 'Past and Present' and 'The Journal of Modern History' combined, an indispensable resource for historians and students."

J.C.D. Clark

University of Kansas, USA

"History Compass allows students to take the classroom home by providing reliable information and expert analysis of historical issues on demand. It offers teachers new insights, fresh inspiration, and up-to-date bibliographies. An excellent blend of traditional and virtual pedagogies."

Cynthia Herrup

University of Southern California, USA

"An immensely valuable resource for teaching and learning, History Compass is the only scholarly publication where historians and students can find such a large and varied amount of high-quality historiography."

David Bates

Director of the Institute of Historical Research

"History Compass, true to its name, does offer a very helpful, and timely, tool to find one's way in several different fields. It is especially useful, I think, to obtain an introduction to fields in which one is not specialized oneself."

J Kamphorst

Leiden University, The Netherlands
